Volunteers will work in two remote schools within Cambodia that need your help to deliver invaluable education. The first school program takes place in a village school located in Kro Bei Riel Commune, a short cycle ride outside the town of Siem Reap. The school provides educational opportunities for over 1000
disadvantaged children and young adults.
The second school is off the coast of Cambodia, on an island that has never seen tourism before. These children want the same chances as the children on the mainland. Help them work towards the same job prospects and chances of secondary education.
The curriculum at both schools is designed to ensure that the children have the skills appropriate for life within the village and to further their employment prospects as well as providing the opportunity for them to enter higher education. Classes are provided in English, Computing, Arts, Crafts, Music, Sports, Organic Farming, Hospitality, Social Work as well as providing education on hygiene, nutrition and environmental issues.
Your volunteer placement at either of the schools is for a minimum of four weeks and you will be involved in working with the teaching staff to deliver the current education program. You will be expected to assist with lesson preparation and delivery, classroom management and extra-curricular activities. In short, you will be working and volunteering with the local teachers on the day to day issues that all teachers deal with. You will have the opportunity to practice your up-to-date training, techniques and pedagogy throughout your life-changing volunteer abroad experience.
This is an opportunity for you to bring your own knowledge and skills, sharing them with Cambodian teachers in a fun, relaxed and meaningful way. The school placement and volunteering opportunity may also contribute towards your annual professional development requirements. You will receive a statement of your volunteer activities and achievements from the Director of the school.
For larger groups it is possible to have a fully qualified and experienced Australian teacher on hand to assist you in a mentoring and development role.
Your teaching skills will add enormously to the employment prospects and opportunities
for these children as you advance their English skills.
The school in the Kro Bei Riel community uses the ‘New Headway’ English Curriculum (Liz & John Soars) which caters for all levels of development. The students’ language ability in reading, writing, speaking and grammar is graded in a pre-test at the beginning of a unit of work. Students are subsequently allocated to their appropriate level and assigned to a class accordingly. At any one time there are up to 5 English classes running.
Classes are taught by Khmer teachers and Khmer trainee teachers, with assistance from international volunteers
Class sizes vary between 10 – 30 students
School sessions run Monday to Friday, twice daily from 8-11am and 1-4pm
Students range in age from 7 – 20 years, the majority of whom are at primary level.
The main objectives of the English classes are as follows:
Provide free supplementary English education to the children and young adults in the Kro Bei Riel Community
Provide a stimulating and positive environment in which students can learn
Encourage positive social interaction between students from different villages within the community
Increase the opportunities/prepare the children for further educational opportunities at university
Increase the opportunities for rural children when gaining employment in the thriving tourism industry of Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, or Sihanoukville.
This program is only available to professionally qualified teachers and to student teachers currently enrolled in a recognized teacher training institution.
Student teachers will have to provide a background check for working with children from a relevant police authority.

Volunteer abroad for longer by adding an extension
The Cambodian Teaching program lasts 28 days, but it doesn't have to end there... Adding one of these volunteering opportunities as an extension means you will be able to stay longer and achieve more, or enjoy another program, for much less than the cost of buying two separate programs.
Depending on the extension you choose, you can save around $500 / £325.
