Today it was time to head out to the crèche, meet the kids and see what’s on the agenda for the week. Well I can tell you now, it’s a lot 🙂
But first I want to describe to you the moment we arrived in our safari vehicles to the crèche. We turned the corner, saw a playground and heard kids playing. As soon as they saw us and we pulled up out front everyone was absolutely swarmed with screaming happy children who just wanted to be picked up play with us. It was an amazing welcome an introduction to the crèche, seeing these beautiful children aged anywhere between 1-8. To know that we are going to be able to help them is pretty special.
Once the kids had calmed down a tiny bit, the teachers assembled them and they sang us a multitude of songs. A lot of clapping and stamping and twirling and of course singing…the volunteers were quick to join in and I think both groups were having as much fun a each other by the end. At this crèche in particular, we will start the building of a new soup kitchen. This is to ensure that the kids who go here have adequate food and it can be prepared on site. Currently each day we bring lunch for the kids here. Also at this crèche is the block making area. To build you must have blocks and to get the blocks you have to make them 🙂 using cement, sand and water. We will definitely be working out muscles hard this week!
The other half of the group headed out to the second and newer crèche to continue the work of the last group. Again the same amazing greeting was had, children rushing the car and jumping up! We are building a toilet block and making a very cool play area for the kids. It’s going to be a mini race track! With rubber track and type perimeter. It will all make sense once the photos are up I promise 🙂
It was a sweltering day, in the high 30’s if not breaching 40! I’m so proud of every single person for their efforts and their commitment to making a difference here. The kids helped with the work…or tried too…and made the day so much better. We had a lot of progress in just one day so I’m exited about how much we can get done in a week!!
After work was finished we headed back and all jumped in the pool (after a quick shower to wash off the ton of dirt!). It was the best way I can think of to end a hot days work. Free time until dinner, and then an early night was had…a tired group of volunteers 🙂
