Wow what an amazing first day at the creche!
It is such a change from being out at the gamepark, so many smiling faces, hugs and a whole lot of noise. Driving out in the morning to the first of the two creches we are working at we were waved at by every person in the community both old and young. It instantly made us feel at home and set the tone for what was going to be a great day.
As we arrived at the first creche we were greeted by smiling kids all wanting to be picked up, tickled, chased, try on sunglasses but most of all try out cameras! The kids absolutely love taking pictures of not only themselves but us and everything around us. We would often find throughout the day after lending the camera to a child another 100 photos taken! Because of this there have been some incredible candid pictures taken from the childrens perspective (I will upload a range of these later).
On the work and construction side of things we split into two groups. One based at the first creche building concrete blocks to be used for the soup kitchen we are building and the other group at the second creche mixing concrete and looking after the children with educational games and sport.
Over the course of the day I think everyone gained a new found appreciation of the hard work parents of young children have on a daily basis, while so rewarding it can be extremely tiring having two different kids hanging off you at all times. Everytime hearing them laugh or seeing them smile makes it all worth it.
Over the course of the day many new friends were made as we also made steady progress on our construction work. Tomorrow we are going to be starting on a foundation for the water catchment needed at the creche so this will keep us very busy.
Getting back after our work we decided to head out to the annual Hippo Festival happening in St Lucia where there were market stalls, live music, rugby on the television…. but most importantly for us a GIANT BLOW UP SLIDE!
It made for a fun finish to what had been a fantastic first day out here. But little did we know there was one surprise left, after getting back to our accommodation we were called outside by the staff to check out the Hippo that had wandered into the neighbours front lawn!
We then had a bonfire and sat around telling stories and jokes from the day. A perfect Saturday night!
