Crèche life with new identities

Day 2 at the crèches and so much is happening! The children are as excitable as ever and the enthusiasm hasn’t waned. Today we were continuing on with yesterday’s jobs, just everybody was switched around. Some jobs were a bit tougher than others…the soil for digging is very hard and pick axes are needed…and mixing cement in this heat it tough work.

Today it reached into the 40’s, temperature wise. Lots of breaks, lots of water and lots of sunblock! We got the outer race track all dug and 80% of the tires fitted. It’s starting to come together and we’re all excited to see it finished. The toilet block is also coming along great, it’s getting higher by the day and the door frames and windows are being put in. At the other crèche block making has turned into a competition as to who can make the most blocks in one day! I shall keep you posted on the results. As for the soup kitchen, it now has it’s foundations and the beginnings of walls going up. The floor had been levelled and tomorrow there will be A LOT of cement mixing to put down the floor. Everything is coming along great and on schedule!

We finished all of the work we could and even got to leave a little early! The pool was calling everyone to it as well as the local juice shop 🙂

In the late afternoon we had another Zulu lesson where everybody was allocated their Zulu names. Some have clicks and all kinds of other sounds attached to then…learning another 18 names is going to be tough! Especially when they are so foreign and unique! Haha

Here they are:
(Also for those at home, anything with a Q or and X is a type of click 🙂

Tegan – Thabo
Hayley – Zipho
Brin – Bongiwe
Ash – Azime
Ainsley – Mathabi
Nicole – Thobile
Taylor – Nozipho
Shavonne – Xoli
Lochie – Jabulani
Travis – Qiniso
Chris – Zimphiwe
Matt – Nqubeko
Michaela – Sanele
Jade – Qondi

Sam – Lungani
Myself (Jess) – Qhowe

We’ve had a lot of fun trying out our new names 🙂

After dinner some of the volunteers decided to head out for dessert in town at a local restaurant. It was very decadent and delicious! Our
sugar cravings all satisfied. Another early night…as tomorrow is going to be another hot and hard day of work.

Until tomorrow
~ Jess
