What an amazing first day at the Creche!
We were up bright and early for breakfast ready to start our first day of work at the Creche. Heading out in the safari vehicles we went to visit the first of the two Creches we are working at. We looked around all the work that had been done by previous volunteers and learnt our objectives over the next week.
Everyone made fast friends with the beautiful kids and were so excited to begin helping out. Victor, Cat, Bernie and Mary Ellen stayed behind at the first Creche to begin digging the foundations for a soup kitchen while the rest of us travelled to the second Creche to begin work there.
Upon arriving we saw the soup kitchen that we are working to finish to provide a year round facility to feed the children who attend the Creche as well as a water catchment we are building to provide fresh water.
Over the course of the day we mixed many batches of cement, plastered the walls of the soup kitchen and started building the foundations to the water catchment.
Of course throughout the day we still found plenty of time to play and teach the wonderful kids at both Creches.
After lunch we all worked together to unload the bricks while a group of volunteers went back to town to collect a load of stones needed for the foundation concrete.
It was a highly productive first day at the Creche and I was so proud to see all the volunteers working so hard, willing to do whatever task was asked and having a brilliant time while doing it.
After the Creche work it was time to head out onto St Lucia lake for the Hippo and Croc cruise!
After last nights hippo visit we had already seen Hippos up close, but no one was prepared for the number of Hippos we would see out on the water.
We also managed to catch a couple of Crocs basking in the sun.
It all made for a fantastic finsh to what had been a great first day of work.
With some free time after the cruise everyone checked out the markets of St Lucia then enjoyed a delicious dinner before finally finishing up with some cards for the night.
What a day, can’t wait for tomorrow!!!
