Sunday fun day. Today was a relaxing Sunday before the hard work starts in the week. A well deserved sleep in was in order and a trip to the beach! The weather was perfect and hot, the sunblock applied liberally and the waves were rolling. A great few hours and a perfect way to start the day!
After lunch it was free time where everyone could do as they pleased. Wander round town, buy souvenirs, hang by the pool, take a nap, do laundry or whatever the heart desired.
At 4pm however it was time for a hippo and croc cruise through St Lucia estuary. The estuary has the highest population of hippos in South Africa, numbering in at over 800 and more that 1200 crocodiles. Definitely not the place you to be swimming! But being in the boat and pulling up next to a big group of hippos is pretty surreal. They look quite small (as only the top of their head is out of the water) and adorable but are actually huge and quite aggressive. In fact they are the #1 killer in africa in regards to animal attacks as people tend to underestimate them. We were happy to be in the boat that for sure! Seeing crocodiles heads pop out of the water here and there was also an experience! They truly look like dinosaurs. It was a nice relaxing cruise to end a relaxing day. I hope the volunteers havnt gotten used to it, as tomorrow we are out to the crèches and start working hard! Invasive plant clearing was a walk I’m the park compared to what I have in store! Haha
