Good Morning Africa on our final day at Thanda Game Reserve which actually makes us very sad as we have had such a wonderful week here and experienced soo much and had plenty of life changing moments throughout our whole trip that we are just not ready to leave yet .
And what a night we had last night !! We joined the other volunteers at the local and had a fantastic night partying with them .
We began the evening getting a lift on the open back vehicles and we cannot begin to explain how cold it was haha we pretty much got brain freeze and had to defrost our faces when we arrived lol . The night was full of music and dancing and some great laughs ,on the way back Ben, Will and Eric who got a later lift felt the car suddenly brake !! What was it ??!! HYENAS !! 3 Hyenas came running out of the bush right in front of us .. we finally found them !! !
Back at the camp we all chilled around the camp fire until the early hours and then headed to bed for our final mornings drive – as we are all too tired to walk for another 3 hours haha . It was a beautiful start to the morning albeit a little chilly with the fog surrounding camp so we grabbed the blankets and headed out into the reserve .
Keeping our eyes peeled along the way up ahead silhouetted by the sun and fog was a Giraffe which looked really cool . We had a fair few bird sightings this morning with a couple of great ones of a Juvenile Martial Eagle ( Africa’s largest Eagle ) , an African Hawk Eagle and a Fork Tailed Drongo which is a master of mimicking other animals calls .
Then from the left hand side of the bushes right out in the open Pieter our guide spotted a Black Backed Jackal which was one of the last few animals we wanted to see .. the morning was just getting better and better . It was only a short 3 hour drive this morning but a lot of the animals seemed to be having a lie in as it was soo bitter this morning and the fog was still hanging around .
We did however manage to have a few other sightings before the end of the morning .. some Blue Wildebeest , Southern Yellow Billed Hornbill , Brown Hooded Kingfisher and yet another Giraffe . Time was pushing on and we still needed to get back to camp , pack and have some brunch before making our way back to St Lucia .
Our ride arrived at 1Oam and we had to say a finally goodbye to Pieter who has been a wonderful and very knowledgeable guide and has taught us a great deal during our time here and Sbu who has been looking after us at the camp all week .. 2 great men who we will miss but will hopefully get to see again at some point .
Arriving in St Lucia we checked in to our posh rooms and got the chance to relax after such a long night last night either by chilling in the lounge and watching TV or having a bit of a snooze on the sofa hehe or heading into town to do a bit of last minute shopping for our loved ones back home . Rui who hasn’t yet been able to see a Hippo took the opportunity of the free afternoon and headed out on the Hippo and Croc cruise on the St Lucia Estuary and had an absolutely fantastic time and finally got to see her Hippos .
The rest of the afternoon was spent relaxing and we ended off the evening by having a bit of a chilled movie night because we have to be up early tomorrow morning ready to catch our flights back home to tell you all the stories from the last week and show you all the incredible pictures we have . It also gave us the chance to go through some of our favourite moments from the last week and compare with each other .
We just wish this didn’t have to be our last night …..
