Hey everybody! My name is Matthew and I’ll be the team leader for South Africa this season. I am so excited to get started with this seasons project! . We are going to have so many good times and make such a difference!
I am a fun loving Canadian straight from the prairies of Saskatchewan–brownie points if you know where that is! I attend school there studying Humanities and can’t wait to make a difference to those that need it most. I’ve spent the last year representing and volunteering with Reach Out Volunteers and have had the most incredible experiences and I can’t wait for everyone coming to Africa to do the same!
There are two main projects that we will be working on this season: the game park and créche. On the game park we work on wildlife conservation projects, so expect to see some pictures of some amazing animals and creatures on this blog. We remove alien plants that kill off native shrubbery, snare patrol to protect the animals, rhino tracking, and providing volunteers information about ivory poaching and so much more!
For those of you that aren’t familiar, créche is essentially a kindergarten for the kids in these communities. A lot of these parents need to work so the kids need these créches as they are a safe environment for the kids to access free education and care.
That’s about all I have for now! We have a big group coming for the first project, and I can’t wait to meet all of you! The volunteers are going to be arriving in the next couple days, so stay tuned on this blog and be sure to follow us on Instagram @ReachOutVolunteers so you can see even more videos and pictures from here in South Africa!
