Today was our first day!! Everyone came in all throughout the day yesterday and we were all together for a traditional South African Braii dinner! Delicious! Full of all kinds of meats, spices, salads and bread. It was definitely an early night for everyone last night, as those long flights take it out of you! But everyone was together and excited to get started.
But today was a new day and an exciting one. We were heading out to the game park, to work at a buffalo sanctuary. It was goodbye to Durban and hello open road! Driving in the safari vehicles was one of the highlights of the day…the wind in your hair and the stunning scenery whizzing past. To say it was hot may be an understatement…it was sweltering! Welcome to Africa 🙂
We stocked up on a weeks worth of snacks, and found out way to the sanctuary where we are staying in quaint little huts in the middle of the game park. We had an orientation of what we will be doing this week and some lunch, then the next few hours we spent on a walk around part of the game park, learning about the local plants and animals (big and small) and right at the end of the walk, seeing the local buffalo residents.
We also headed on a game drive to which we saw zebras, impala, kudu and so many more. Trust me when I say it’s amazing out here!
Once back at camp there was time to relax and have dinner before the group was split in two and half went out for a night drive. Such a different array of animals come out at night and it sure is a challenging to spot them with your torches! But I’m proud of everyone for finding us impala, zebras, buffalo and wait for it…we also saw.
Stunning animals and phenomenal to see in person. I think everyone’s coming home as giraffes as their new favourite animal! 🙂
Tomorrow we start work! Hope everyone is ready 🙂
Internet here at the game park is as you can imagine not great! I will do my best to upload pictures, but if I can’t, next week when we are in St Lucia I shall upload them all! 🙂
