One last hurrah!

Our last day and night together were such a success. I love these peeps so much! I wish we could’ve spent longer than a week together, but I am very grateful to have shared this time with everyone here. We sadly packed up our things this morning after feeding the elephants and saying our farewells….

Don’t stop the weeding!

Hold on to that feelinggg! Changin the words, but not the vibe! (Don’t stop believing by Journey) Basically, we did a whole lot of weeding today! It was fantastic. It wasn’t very difficult work, which was perfect for our last official day of helping at the sanctuary. We just spent the day chatting, singing and…

duck duck goose

Even though we didn’t play the game duck duck goose, we were close! We instead cleaned out the goose pond this morning. It may sound gross, but it really wasn’t bad! We got to wear some good looking gum boots and toss buckets of water around the goose enclosures. We made a game out of…

Bunch of goofballs!

I think it’s safe to say that we have a bunch of goofs on this week’s program! We have gotten comfortable with each other very quickly, but that’s the best way to do it! Everyone has been really fun to get to know and the work goes by so much quicker when we’re all…

Chop Chop Choppin

We had a very successful first day at the sanctuary today! We split up the groups again and half went to chop lots and lots of sugar cane trees while the other continued work on the fire break. It’s a long continual process with all of these groups, but they are making so much progress…

New beginnings :)

I have collected new recruits for another week at the elephant sanctuary! Mr. Bun passed the torch to me this morning and I took off with his lovely set of 16 hard working volunteers. We took the short two hour bus ride to get acquainted and finally arrived at the sanctuary. We took some much…

It’s the end already?

Wow. What a journey this has been! Today we said our goodbyes to the elephants and monkeys and headed back to Siem Reap. We got an opportunity to do last minute shopping, grab some ice cream and sing karaoke all night long. We have experienced so much together in the last two weeks. From the…

Saving the jungle one tree at a time

We have the power! After some raking and fire break work this morning, we trudged out into the jungle with an elephant as a guide to save the trees. We went around a tied orange cloths that were blessed by Cambodian monks. Once tied around the trunk, anyone who cuts down the tree is believed…

What’s the story morning glory

Today entailed a lot of planting! We planted so many things, I almost lost track of it all! The sanctuary is self sustainable with fresh vegetables, fruits, etc., and the gardens are everywhere! Today we helped plant papaya trees, morning glory veggies and sugar cane. We turned an entire area into a freshly planted sugar…

If you’re happy and you know it!

It was another fantastic day at the elephant sanctuary today! We continued our group work in the morning and afternoon with one group finishing off the fire break and the other raiding the weeds around the newly planted trees to also protect against the fire. Save the trees! It was a very pleasant temperature today…
