Day 4 – Rivers and elbow grease!!

Today it was time to stretch out muscles out and get our hands dirty! It was our job to build several dams out of rocks in the rivers. The reason this is important is because as the season gets drier the water levels in the rivers is going down. It’s very important for the elephants to be able to bathe in the river every day to stay healthy and clean. So by building a dam we raising the water levels of the river in the specific areas the elephants swam. Rocks from all around and in the river were used…big and small! It’s truly awesome to see how much progress you can make with 13people in just a few hours. The photos below don’t do the amount of work put in the by volunteers justice!

Lunch was well deserved today and by the time it came around everyone rushed to get their plate full when the lunch gong was rung. Fresh vegetables, meat and fish were on the menu! A few games of cards were played but mostly the volunteers rested in the many hammocks and comfy couches around the base camp. Siesta time!

It was back to work in the afternoon, building another dam, well 3 in fact in the valley of Heaven. This was a major success and very heavy work! Our line of rock passing was a fantastic sight to see and showed what team work can do!

Our finished 3 dams! tired volunteers indeed 🙂

After the hike back up the steep hill its safe to say the volunteers were pooped, and a hearty dinner was well received and an early night was on the agenda!

The work continues tomorrow

Until then!
