It was back to work this morning at the elephants! Because we smashed out all of the work we needed to yesterday with the dam building, today it was time to harvest some bananas to feed to the elephants tomorrow. The group was split in two and each went to different banana fields. Most people think that the elephants would only eat the actual bananas but they actually love to eat the entire branch/tree! So once the bananas were but down, the trunks were cut into smaller and easier to carry pieces. Tiiiiiiiiimbeeeeeeer! In total around six large bunches of bananas were collected and many more trunks. It was heavy work but again the volunteers worked efficiently and got it finished early. They were rewarded with a longer break before lunch and it went down splendidly!
After lunch the volunteers had the privileged to visit a local and very sacred waterfall to the Banong people (the local indigenous people). They have many ceremonies each year celebrating the various forest spirits, as they are animists. After a trek to the waterfall, it was time for a swim! To show our respects to the culture it was a fully clothed swim! (for the girls at least). Although it was chilly it was amazing once you got in and to bathe under the waterfall and go behind it…and of course swing on the vines like Tarzans and Janes.
It was a fantastic day filled with work and play. Tomorrow will be filled with elephants!!
