Day 5 – Jungle Adventures

Today, as have all days so far, was full of adventure! In the morning we bonded over a yummy breakfast and got ready for the day. It was back to finish the dam and see the progress from yesterday. As we rounded the corner in the jungle to where the small stream was yesterday, we saw our filled sand bags and the water levels had significantly raised! The water had raised at least to the knee level was no longer a small stream! Success! But theres always a chance to improve it further 🙂 With some elbow grease we got everything finished before lunch! I’d like to say here that I’m very proud of these guys. After some tasteful and definitely not cheesy group photos we headed back to base where a delicious lunch was had.

Now after lunch we headed on a jungle walk with some elephants. First stop was a dam that had been built earlier this year. We waited by the water for the elephants to arrive and when she did we got the chance to bathe her! I think the volunteers got more wet than the elephant but it was great fun. Afterwards, we went on our jungle trek through the undergrowth of vines and trees. Walking through the jungle with an elephant was a pretty surreal experience. We walked a big circle and came upon our own dam which had filled up significantly! It was amazing to see the elephant in our hand built dam. We wandered back to the main buildings, cut up some banana trees and fed them to the hungry elephants! They love it!

On the way back, we met some locals at the sanctuary playing volleyball and our group was keen to join in! We may not have won but we put in a good group effort and got some points off them 🙂

Relaxation was next on the cards before dinner and the bungalows were the perfect place to hang out. Dinner of course was delicious and we had a movie night afterwards. Here’s to tomorrow!!

Good night and a good tomorrow!
