Today we started the day as many people would dream of…by feeding elephants! After their cheeky antics of trying to get into the sanctuaries crops, we headed to the other dam to dig out a part of the edge to create a place for the elephants to drink.
What we didn’t anticipate was the amount of mud! People’s gum boots were getting stuck all over the place and mud was everywhere! Our human conveyer belt was much messier today but still just as fun. However we were working in the hot sun and no shade today, so many drink breaks were needed as well as rests in the shade. Which is actually where we had out lunch as well! We had beautifully packaged fried rice in banana leaves with chop sticks…it was delicious! We had achieved a major difference in the drinking water section of the dam and because of the heat, headed back to base after lunch.
Unfortunately we were saying goodbye to 4 volunteers today that had extended their previous trips to include the elephants. Martin, Mon, Brie and Steph. We were privileged to have them as part if our family and are truly sad to see them leave. No one wants to leave here tomorrow 🙁
In the afternoon we headed back to our dam to wash the elephants. When we arrived however we discovered there had been a breach and when the elephants arrived they created a new breach by standing on it! Haha there was work for us to do tomorrow morning, but in the meantime we played, washed and marveled at the elephants 🙂
Dinner was of course scrumptious as always and it was an early night as everyone was pretty tired from today’s efforts. Under our mosquito nets we curled up under our blankets as it was quite a chilly night.
Good night and a good tomorrow!
