Today is the beginning of the next stage of our adventure… The Elephant Sanctuary!
The volunteers sat anxiously in the hotel lobby waiting for the bus to arrive. The majority of the group (the carnivores) gobbled down their meat and egg filled breakfast sandwiches knowing full well that this would be their last taste of meat for a week.
The bus arrived and we were off on our 2 hour journey to the elephant sanctuary. The trip went faster than any of could have anticipated… probably because everyone was unconscious for most of the ride.
Upon our arrival we were presented with our first delicious vegetarian meal and then checked into our bungalows where we encountered our next surprise… 7 puppies! The puppies are only a few months old and live with us at the bungalows.
We had our orientation in the afternoon where we met the monkeys that have been rescued from local markets. They are kept in a rehabilitation center where they are being slowly readjusted to live in the forest.
Of course the highlight of the day is what came lumbering out of the forest at 3:30. The Elephants here have been rescued from the illegal logging industry here in Cambodia and the sanctuary gives them a place to live out their lives as close as possible to how a wild elephant would.
In the evening we watched a documentary about the sanctuary an the domestication process of elephants.
Tomorrow our work begins!
