Good evening!! It’s Katelyn here and the two week village and elephant group that just finished up in Siem Reap has arrived safely to the Elephant Sanctuary about two hours north of the city. This morning, before we headed here, we welcomed our 12th volunteer – Ellyse from Australia!
After arriving at the sanctuary everyone settled into their humble abode for the week – bamboo huts complete with no wifi, no electricity and no running water 😉 Taking a break from fast paced civilization for the week never felt so goooood!
Chet, the sanctuary’s volunteer coordinator, took us on a quick orientation around the sanctuary to see all the animals from geese to monkeys then headed back in for a break until dinnertime. At 6:00 we all gathered for a full on vegetarian buffet.
Right now were sitting down to watch a documentary on the trainings an elephant will go through when captured to work in the tourism or logging industry. It’s a bit heartbreaking to watch, but with better knowledge on the past treatment of elephants in the sanctuary we are able to understand the meaningful contribution we are all about to be apart of.
Tomorrow we get to meet the elephants and then real work begins!
Good night 🙂
