Diving dudes

Wednesday 28th May   Today was another day all about diving. The Open Water team studied their scuba info and took exams while the Advanced divers (Tom, Marachel and Kelsie, who have renamed their team the Somersaulting Sea Squirts so as to be less elitist) went for another skills dive.   After lunch the newbie divers…

Hit the Ground Diving

Tuesday 27th May   The first order of business today was dive theory. Everyone managed to do a lot of homework despite the jetlag so we were off to a great start. The advanced divers went for their first dive which was all about identifying interesting marine life, while the new divers studied the basics…

Koh Rong ahoy!

Today we set off on our long journey to the island of Koh Rong which will be our home for the next two weeks.   A minivan picked us up from our hotel to take us to Sihanoukville, the town on the mainland coast where we then get the ferry. The ride was an experience…

Newbies in Phnom Penh!

Hi everyone out there in blog land!   I’m Jane, the team leader for the Island Program. I’m very excited to have my new batch of volunteers and the final two arriving in an hour. Altogether we have six girls and three boys plus myself, all North Americans. Already I can tell we have a fun,…

Travellin’ Travellers

Today we made the long (surprisingly long!) journey from our quiet island of Koh Rong to the bustle of Phnom Penh. We left early from the village by ferry and after a drowsy couple of hours on the water we arrived in Sihanoukville.   We grabbed a quick lunch of sandwiches at Holy Cow restaurant…

Final Thursday

Today was our last day of work and we sure filled it. Today’s pattern was work, dive, lunch, work, dive.   We started with the hardest work first. Half of the team resumed bricklaying at the playground while the other half worked at the incinerator. Mixing concrete and shovelling rubbish is hot, sticky work but…

Wet Wednesday

Today we started and finished with a dive.   First thing we loaded up the boat and headed out to clean the reef pods. The plan to go early paid off – the tide was slack and the visibility decent. We scrubbed and plucked seaweed and other algae off the metal frames to allow coral…

Chilled Tuesday

Today was another day where we hit the ground running. All of us started work at the playground this morning raking, picking up, fixing and brick laying. We managed to lay bricks around the whole playground except one edge, which will keep the sand in and the rainwater out. We worked hard, got hot and…

Going hard on Monday

Today we started hard! By 8 o’clock we were working at the incinerator, fixing, digging, lighting the fire and loading. We manage to remove an impressive amount of garbage and we cleared space for the two new compost bins. The bins themselves we helped make out of 44-gallon drums. They rotate around a central pole…

Restful Sunday

Today was very much a day of rest. From the beginning everyone had a very chilled vibe. Heather and Brittany went on a deep dive with Kylie to complete a component of their advanced open water certificate. The rest of us lazed around, read books and napped in the shade.   At dinner time some…
