On The Road Again

Dearest readers, Our journey began today with a 630am bus pick up. Breakfast arrived just in time from the hotel kitchen. We scarfed down our morning meal and we were off. The bus took a swift 5 hours. The time flew by through a combination of naps, Cambodian music videos, and strangely entertaining 1980’s Chinese…

Welcome to Cambodia!

G’day guys, I’m John, your Team Leader for the Cambodia Island program and I’m excited to show you all my home away from home! I’m from the great state of NY, USA and have decided to trade the blizzards and snow shoveling this winter for tropical beaches and Coconuts. I’ve been working with Reach Out Volunteers…

“I don’t wanna leave”

Numerous times today that quote was heard. Everyone was just sulking about having to go. However, it’s great leaving knowing we have made memories and bonds for a lifetime. We became the best of friends, and we all know we’ll be seeing each other again one day. I caught them already making plans to meet…

Bus-tastic!

Andddd we’re back in Phnom Penh! It was an early morning boat ride to the mainland and an afternoon bus, but we got here with plenty of time to spare for activities. It was really tough to say goodbye this morning. I think everyone was sad having to leave, but they are hoping and planning…

Bombs away!

Our last day was such a success! We completed so many walls of bricks, which means the water catchment will most certainly be done by the time rainy season starts. It’s such an accomplishment and these amazing volunteers have been incredibly motivated to finish as much as possible. Upon completion, the only thing to do…

We are not trashy

We may not be trashy, but we sure did spend a lot of time with trash today! To mix up our day a bit, we took a break from brick laying and jumped into trashing. We go around and collect all the bins in town once/twice a week and dump them into the incinerator to…

Birthday bricks and bonfires!

These guys are the best! I woke up this morning to birthday wishes, a special birthday ukelele song, and a card colored and signed by everyone. They even got up extra early to draw a big piece of art on the concrete area in front of the house with chalk. To top it all off,…

Shake it off

It was our first pod day today! What the heck does that mean? Well, it’s one of the main reasons we’re here, and it’s so exciting! We worked on these coral pods which our the most essential aspect to creating the man made coral reef. They are the growing agents that the coral grows directly…

Back for seconds!

Well I guess they must’ve had a good time yesterday at the beach because they decided to head back for round two today! So basically, they had a repeat day on the same beautiful beach. They napped and sun bathed and got gorgeously tan. Luckily, everyone managed to avoid getting burned too, so that was certainly…

Oh Sandy!

“I sit and wonder whyyy eye eye oh why, you let me get so sandyyyy…” -Grease I hope you all know the reference to that song in the movie Grease. I changed the words at the end, but now the song relates to our activities today! To the beach they went this fine and beautiful…
