Good morning my dearest blog readers!
Today was a day off from buildling. It started extra extra EXTRA bright and early as it was Angkor Wat day and the volunteers (wisely) decided to visit it at sunrise. They drug themselves out of bed at 4am to depart for the temple. With blankets underneath us we all enjoyed a nice, relaxing hour watching the sunrise on the front lawn of the magical place. Around 7am, the sun had fully risen and we took a tour around the temple. We were able to experience being blessed by a Cambodian monk AND climb all the way to the top of the temple.
After Angkor Wat Temple we went to see two more temples. Bayon Temple and many of the volunteer’s favorite — Ta Prohm Temple! (or the place where Tomb Raider with Angelina Jolie was filmed!!) Our tour guide told us loads of information about Cambodia and temples themselves. It was incredible to hear the history of each separate temple and try to imagine how their massive structures were ever built. Around noon we headed back into the town of Siem Reap for lunch at Karo (my favorite) where everyone got to meet (and fall in love with) Mulan, the restaurant’s little puppy!
The volunteers spent the afternoon relaxing, reading and swimming until it was time for a lil somethin’ somethin’ surprise we had up our sleeve. We decided that you can’t go to Angkor Wat at sunrise if you’re not going to go see it at sunset too! So thats what we did. We boarded the bus at 4pm again and headed back to the park where we climbed Bakheng Mountain to watch the sunrise in the Angkor Park. Even though it was a bit cloudy, the atmosphere was surreal. The perfect way to end the day.
Right now were about to head to dinner and call it a night as everyone is a bit tired from today’s early activities. Tomorrow it is back to work and teaching!!
