Today is our last day of the program! 🙁
In the morning we went to the village as usual but today instead of splitting into two groups, we all banded together to finish the goals in the village for the week. It was all hands on deck and in no time we had completed the tasks we were set. We had a delicious lunch (as usual) and prepared for a full afternoon at the construction site. There we all pitched in too, working to get the walls of the building finished. Soon after we began the rain started falling and didn’t stop. It was such a shock to be cold for a change! But it takes more than some rain to stop a Reach Out Volunteer so we did the hokey pokey to warm up and worked solidly until all six palm thatch wall panels were in place.
After our work was done we got a highly competitive game of basketball happening. Today, for our last day, we had dinner at the village. There were speeches from the local kids and our volunteers, we each got bracelets and it started to sink in that we have to go home! Some of the young girls did a traditional apsara dance for us while we ate our special farewell dinner.
These last two weeks (it feel like much longer!) have been amazing. As the team leader I have been blown away by the continued effort and camaraderie of this group. We have reached so many of our specific goals, like finishing the walls of the community building but even more important is the ongoing contribution to the village – practicing English with the high school kids, teaching the little kids and leading by example and supporting this incredible self-help community.
I hope everyone has a safe trip home, thank you for your hard work and CONGRATULATIONS!
