Today was our last day of program! Today, in order to finish the building projects we’ve been working on we spent the whole day at the construction site and in the surrounding communities. In the morning we continued the brick and concrete on the new front wall and gate for the community centre and also made wall panels from bamboo and palm leaf thatch. We made the panels whole at the community centre, then transported them so we could renovate the homes of a few families that are particularly struggling. The existing walls of the houses and much of the floor too was completely dilapidated. We replaced the old walls with our new panels, fixed them into position and added an extra feature – at one house a covered annex and at another a new floor. It was hard work in the heat and then in the rain but the gratitude shown by the mother of the family made it all worthwhile.
After a long work day instead of heading back into town as normal, we stayed at the village playing games and chatting. As it got dark the party really began! The high school kids cooked us a delicious and very generous dinner, while we listened to speeches, watched some of the young girls do a beautiful traditional apsara dance. Apsara dancing used to be only performed for the king, so getting our own special dance made us feel pretty regal. After dinner, more chatting, laughing and dancing. Eventually it was time to go (boo hoo!).
The party was a perfect end to a wonderful couple of weeks. Thank you very much to all the volunteers for your enthusiasm, your funny comments and above all your hard work. Together you made a huge positive impact here. I hope you’re all as proud of yourselves as I am! 🙂
